WAGES
Workshop Activity for Gender Equity Simulation
About WAGES-Academic
About WAGES-Academic
WAGES-Academic delivers well-documented, empirically-based information in a brief and interactive format. Elements of the activity allow for direct comparison of gender-specific realities in the academic work environment. The activity is self-contained, takes between 75 and 90 minutes (including a post-activity discussion that is integral to WAGES’ effectiveness), and does not require special skills of the facilitator.
Versions of WAGES for other contexts are under development, including WAGES-Classroom, WAGES-Business, and an on-line multiplayer version. WAGES-Academic has been used successfully with graduate students, upper-division undergrads, and working professionals not affiliated with colleges/universities.
Goals
The activity is designed to meet four core learning objectives, namely for participants to:
1.
RECOGNIZE the negative impact of the accumulation of apparently minor biases and unfair practices on women’s ability to advance in their field.
2.
LEARN that stereotypes and other “cognitive shortcuts” impair our ability to notice bias, and good intentions alone cannot correct the problem.
3.
UNDERSTAND that patterns, not single incidents, are the most visible indicators of gender inequity in the workplace.
4.
DEVELOP AWARENESS that different gender-relevant factors may be more significant at one stage in work life than in others.
